The following are excerpts from a speech given Na Leo Public TV back in 2012. (Yes, I've been throwing the hat in the ring for some time now.) In 2016, Na Leo basically went to a question and answer format. They may have stopped highlighting candidates in 2018, because I never got an invite.
Mahalo to the Na Leo `O Hawi`i and Ross for taking the time to interview the candidates for State House, District 3 (Hilo, Puna and Ka`u). And thank you for tuning in. Hopefully you’ll see my smiling face on the weekends starting in January, bringing you current info on legislative activities.
Two years ago when I ran against Bob Herkes no one called for an interview, not even a local newspaper. It’s good to see Na Leo has stepped up to the plate this year, and I hope it continues to present all the candidates’ views, so you can make an informed choice at the polls in November.
I’m Fred Fogel, candidate for State House, Island of Hawaii, and I’m not your typical politician. But you probably already knew that.
No yard signs. Hawaii’s aina is beautiful enough without the additional human adornment.
And no campaign donations. If I lost the election I would feel like I let my supporters down. And if I won the election – or rather when I win the election - my girlfriend says “think positive and good thing will manifest” - I would feel I owed the donors something.
The only group I want to owe is you - the voters.
My (basic) views and beliefs (probably align with yours) – personal freedom (or personal responsibility) and smaller government (or fiscal responsibility).
On the personal responsibility side of the house Democrats have it right on issues such as abortion, gay union, and cannabis. And some Republicans have it right on gun ownership and employee union choice.
Being in the middle is a good thing - really!
On the smaller government or fiscal responsibility side of the house I have three main goals: (1) improve the way government works, (2) reduce the burden of government on our daily lives, and (3) push governmental authority down to the lowest possible level – the individual counties and it’s citizens, where it best belongs.
More and more these days governmental entities far removed from the county and community level (where the rubber actually meets the road) try to dictate what we can and can’t do for our own good.
Government has never been, is not, and will never be - a parent.
If you would like to know a little more about my ideas for improving the way government operates, refer to the flyer you should have recently received in the mail. If you didn’t get one, stay tuned.
So when you vote try to think outside the normal political box and consider casting a vote, not for a party, but for the candidate whose goals, ideas and views best align with yours.
My name is Fred Fogel...
Mahalo and aloha.

The following is a speech given at Hilo Community College in 2018.
Ten years ago, when running for a nonpartisan County Council seat, after a forum much like this, a lady asked, “Are you affiliated with a political party?” After replying that I am really an independent, but agree with the Democrat, Republican and Libertarian parties on certain issues, she looked in my eyes and said, “Oh, Libertarian, that’s just a cult.”
It’s surprising the things you can learn online. But garens, if someone starts passing around the KoolAid, I ain’t drinking any.
Growing up back in the 60’s I was interested in the way things work. But my PASSION was trying to MAKE THINGS WORK BETTER. That’s why I decided to pursue Industrial Engineering in college – process improvement on steroids – and went on to get a MS degree in Systems Management from USC.
After graduating, my Dad, a pretty akamai guy, had these WORDS OF ADVICE. “Never go into an organization that is running smoothly. Always choose an organization that has ISSUES. That way you probably won’t screw it up any more than it already is.”
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying government has issues – OK – maybe a few. But someone has to plant the seeds of CONSTRUCTIVE CHANGE. If enough people water the seeds (and the water isn’t of the yellow variety) they will BEAR FRUIT OVER TIME.
If you want to really SEE something different in government, look no further.
Mahalo for coming and taking an interest. We need more voters like you. I’m looking forward to HEARING YOUR IDEAS AND RECOMMENDATIONS.
Aloha

This one is for Na Leo, 2020.
You probably can't see it, but I’m wearing jeans tonight.
Trying to look like Harry Kim. It ain’t working too good!
State House District 3 has it all.
Townies of Hilo.
Hawaiian homesteads around Railroad.
The wild west punatics of Puna.
The artisans of Volcano.
The farmers, ranchers and fishermen of Ka`u.
The conservation lands of Maunaloa.
And let’s not forget Pele’s playground, Halema`uma`u.
Too bad the Nene and Kalij can’t vote. We get along fine.
In the next two minutes I’m gonna tell you a little about my background, and a little about my political philosophy. So hang onto your hats – it’s gonna be a fast and furious Fred Fogel.
Born Buffalo, New York. Raised North Augusta, South Carolina.
Undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering, Penn State.
Masters of Science in Systems Management, USC.
Moved to Hawaii January 1973.
Aviator F-4 Phantom jet, United States Marine Corps, and later with the Hawaii Air Guard.
Service writer – Sandy Brodie’s motorcycle shop, Kaneohe and Waipahu.
Industrial Engineer – Pearl Harbor Shipyard.
Last job on Oahu was advisor to a State Department Head in the areas of process improvement, quality, and strategic planning.
Married a local lady – half Samoan, half Puerto Rican.
(You don’t want to make her mad.) Two daughters.
Moved to the Big Island fifteen years ago. Live in a small 20x20 foot house on three acres of rain-forest in the Volcano area – right in the middle of the district.
Entered the world of small business breeding Maine Coon cats – which is a perfect introduction to government.
Seems we are always spending more money than we make.
Politically moderate – socially liberal, fiscally conservative.
Where I stand on an issue depends on the issue, not a party platform.
Main goal is to improve the way government works to better serve the people.
In other words – get government out of your face as much as possible, and let you be all that you can be.
One important note.
My allegiance will always be to the people represented.
Never the power base of a political party, nor any special interest group.
If you are tired of the same-o, same-o - vote Fogel.
Well, looks like it's time to stop pontificating. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say.
Mahalo for taking an interest in the candidates.
